Proton must be kicking themselves in the foot for launching the new Gen.2 on March 8. Talk about having your thunder stolen. No thanks to the 12th National Elections. In one quick swoop, everyone’s an expert in politics. Politics aside, it’s about bloody time for a Gen.2 facelift though. Thankfully, this facelift isn’t another one of those el-cheapo cosmetic slap-ons masterminded by the Proton Marketing and Product Planning department.

This one means business.

Targetted at the younger, sportier end of the market, the new Gen.2 offers plenty of changes internally and externally. First thing you would notice is the prettier front valance. Perhaps ‘pretty’ isn’t a good word. How about ‘sporty’? Ok. Gone is the ‘wau’-inspired bumper. In addition to sideskirts, a rear spoiler to boot (pun intended). Interior looks racy with red and dark grey trimmings. Nice.

The big attraction here is of course the spanking-new, much-delayed but much-welcomed CPS engine, available in both AT and MT transmissions. Offering 93kW (125bhp) and 150Nm @ 4,500rpm, the Gen.2, like the recently facelifted Waja CPS, should offer, theoretically a pokier ride. The infamous Campro torque dip has reportedly been eradicated with the CPS and IAFM unit. This should sit well with more power-hungry folks although 125bhp isn’t considered ‘powerful’ these days. Having said that, the 15% increase is definitely welcomed. And a strong selling point.

Proton has ceased production of standard Campro engines, so we should see CPS or at the very least IAFM-powered Campro lumps across the board.

The new Gen.2 comes in four colour variants – Nanbu Black, Hibiscus Tea (arrgh!), Iridescent White, Metal Grey

Gen2 Facelift Pricing
High line 1.6L CPS
AT – RM60,488
MT – RM57,488

Medium line 1.6L IAFM
AT – RM56,488
MT – RM53,488

Proton Edar has announced that the Gen.2 is opened for booking. Expect delivery within 2 months. Hmm, I’m considering a test drive this weekend!
